LAMDA at Dramarama: A different way to shine!
What Are LAMDA Exams – And Why Are We Doing Them at Dramarama?
Here at Dramarama, we’re all about low-pressure, high-fun drama. Our sessions are bursting with imagination, laughter, improvisation and self-expression – so you might be wondering… why are we offering LAMDA exams, which are often seen as more formal and structured?
Let’s explain.
What Are LAMDA Exams?
LAMDA (short for the London Academy of Music & Dramatic Art) offers graded performance exams in acting, verse & prose and more. These exams involve working on set pieces – often scripts – and performing them either solo or in a pair or small group, followed by a short discussion with the examiner.
They’re a great way for children to:
Build confidence
Improve vocal clarity and expression
Learn how to understand and interpret character and text
Gain recognised qualifications that count towards UCAS points at higher levels
They give young people (and adults!) a chance to learn about performing in a structured, supportive setting.
Wait… But Isn’t Dramarama All About Play and Improvisation?
Absolutely! Our regular sessions are rooted in creativity, imagination and freedom. We know not every child thrives in a traditional, competitive performance setting, which is why our clubs are pressure-free zones - everyone does as much or as little or they feel able to do.
So why bring in something like LAMDA?
Because we believe in offering options. And for many of our children, LAMDA tuition offers a very different kind of magic.
The Power of 1-to-1 Attention
Our LAMDA coaching is delivered in one-to-one or very small group sessions, and that’s where the real power lies. These sessions give children:
Focused, individual attention
A chance to really feel seen, heard and supported
Safe space to grow without comparison or judgement
The opportunity to take exams – if they choose – and receive tangible recognition for their hard work
We’ve seen time and again how empowering this can be. Some children who feel overwhelmed in group settings suddenly blossom when given this personal coaching. And those who prefer not to take the exam? That’s absolutely fine – the experience and confidence-building is what matters most.
The Results Speak for Themselves
We’re proud to say that 100% of our students who choose to take LAMDA exams pass with merit or above – and most achieve distinctions. These aren’t just numbers – they’re the proud smiles, boosted confidence, and happy dances we see after each result comes in.
It’s All About Helping Children Shine
At Dramarama, everything we do is about helping each child shine in their own way – whether that’s through wild improv games, storytelling with groups of friends or a LAMDA script lovingly rehearsed under the guidance of our nurturing team.
If LAMDA feels right for your child, we’d love to explore it with you. And if not? Our regular sessions (now in Wendover on a Monday and Great Missenden on a Tuesday) are still the perfect place to embrace a world of creative play.
After all, confidence, creativity and joy are at the heart of everything we do.
